[2007-09-13] Air Botswana Privatisation Stalls Again It appears once again the directors of SA Airlink went back home empty-handed yesterday after cabinet deferred a decision to sell to them a stake in Air Botswana.
The privatisation of the national airline was one of the agenda items the cabinet discussed yesterday.
Afterwards, the Minister of Works and Transport, Lesego Motsumi said that cabinet has not yet taken a decision on the matter. The cabinet is said to have requested more information after a presentation from the ministry.
Sources close to the cabinet indicated that the sale of the national airline to the South African company is increasingly being resisted by a majority of cabinet ministers. The main argument against the proposed sale is that SA Airlink's alleged lack of the requisite financial muscle and international reach.
Of late, major international players that include Comair and British Airways are reportedly being sought in the Air Botswana privatisation drive. Comair was one of the first aviation firms to show interest in acquiring a stake in Air Botswana, but it subsequently pulled out amid allegations that it was creating conditions favourable to SA Airlink.
Nico Czypionka, the man who was charged with leading the privatisation of Air Botswana left recently without achieving the task.
