[2007-06-14] Minerals run the export show
The heavy dependence of Botswana’s export earnings on diamonds means that minerals continue to dominate the country’s export commodities, it has surfaced.
Recent figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicate that the country’s total exports for March 2007 were P3.0 billion- with 58.7 percent of these or P1.7 billion being diamonds. The other commodities included copper/nickel matte which stood at P681.3 million while both textile and meat exports constituted a combined 12.8 percent or P398.8 million. “As a result of this, the major destination for Botswana exports is the European Union, especially the United Kingdom where rough diamonds are destined,” said the CSO’s March External Trade Monthly Digest.
