[2008-07-10]  Bank Starts Fund for Livestock Traders
Equity Bank and Care International have launched a joint fund for livestock traders and ranchers in the country.Mifugo Biashara will provide credit to livestock traders who offer market outlets for pastoralists to boost their overall income and ultimately uplift their standard of living. Livestock traders will use the facility to purchase livestock, and later sell them to established processors such as the Kenya Meat Commission. Equity will transfer loans for the purchase of livestock directly to Care pastoralist production groups. The beneficiaries of the loan, however, have to meet certain requirements, including purchasing livestock from groups trained by Care against a supply contract with the pastoralists.” We ultimately want to make Kenya self-sufficient in livestock products both for domestic consumption and for export," said Equity chief executive James Mwangi
