[2008-08-12] Safaricom to Stay As Festival of Golf Sponsors The Festival of Golf has renewed its sponsorship deal with mobile phone service provider Safaricom.
Dubbed the Safaricom Festival of Golf, the 32-year-old series will comprise a total of 16 qualifying rounds at various clubs across the country, with the national final scheduled for April 19 next year at Muthaiga Golf Club.
This is the second time that the mobile service provider will be sponsoring the series. The Festival was started by Kenya Breweries in 1976 to raise funds for junior golf programmes in the country.
This year's festival will run from this Saturday to April 2009. Starting off the series at Limuru Country Club will be a field of 180 players.
A strong team from Safaricom will take part in the Limuru event including Safaricom chairman Nicholas Nganga, and chief of information technology Robert Mugo, both members of Limuru, as well as Fred Moturi, chief officer - enterprise and John Barorot, chief technical officer.
Speaking during the unveiling of the sponsorship package for the Festival at Muthaiga Golf Club on Thursday, Moturi said last year's series was well received with over 1,500 golfers taking part.
"Golf is fast being accepted in Kenya, as one of the key business networking opportunities. The 2007 series was proof of that."
David Nyakango, the chairman of Kenya Golf Union said: "We are happy to announce that the Junior Golf Foundation will be conducting golf clinics at the hosting clubs for needy schools within the area."
