[2008-06-19] Mumias agrees to meet Nema rulesMumias Sugar Company has agreed to meet the 14 conditions set by National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) during the construction of the KSH24 billion sugar factory in Tana River District. The Managing Director, Evans Kidero said the sugar miller had written to Nema indicating they were ready to comply with the conditions. "These are environmental conditions which we shall meet. We are now set to role-out plans for the construction of the sugar company," he said. Nema will now release a licence to Mumias to begin construction of the factory. Nema Director-General, Muusya Mwinzi wrote to Mumias Sugar last week having approved the project after the miller submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report. "Nema has reviewed the EIA project report for the proposed project and in light of the provisions of environmental management and co-ordination Act (1999), the authority has approved the proposed project," said Dr Mwinzi. The director-general told Mumias sugar to submit an environmental audit report annually after the first year of the occupation, operation and commissioning of the factory to confirm the efficacy and adequacy of the environmental management plan. In the letter dated June 11, Nema asked Mumias Sugar to comply with all the conditions on environment while undertaking construction of the project. He said Mumias should comply with Nema’s improvement orders throughout the project cycle.Source: Copyright © 2008 Standard Group
