[2008-09-25] Mumias to generate more power for national grid
Mumias Sugar Company will inject 26 megawatts of electricity into the national grid by the end of this year, its CEO has said.
Dr Evans Kidero, said that the miller would retain 12 megawatts of the generated power for use in the factory.
A steam power plant is being set up to boost its power production to provide the 23 additional megawatts.
The Sh3.5 billion project is financed by Proparco, a French company. Apart from cutting the costs of sugar production, the project is also expected to reduce on carbon emissions.
Currently, the company produces 13.6 megawatts, but passes on three megawatts into the national grid. “The project is 75 per cent complete and will be inaugurated on December 25,” Dr Kidero said.
He was speaking after conducting a team of officials from Proparco led by the deputy managing director Laurent Demay on a tour of the factory. They were accompanied by the French ambassador to Kenya, Ms Elizabeth Barbier.
Ms Barbier said that her government was also supporting KenGen in a number of power generation projects.
