[2008-07-08] Safaricom nominated for regional business awards
Listed mobile phone service provider Safaricom has been nominated for the prestigious CBC-African Business Awards 2008.
The awards, in association with the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC), have 16 categories including the African Business Leader of the Year.
Safaricom, formed in 1997 and which has more than 11 million subscribers, was nominated for two category awards – the African Business of the Year and the Telecoms Company of the Year.
The ceremony was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on Friday evening.
“It is great to be nominated for the CBC-African Business of the Year 2008. It fits in our vision to be the best company in Africa,” chief executive officer Mr Michael Joseph said in London.
He said that the mobile service firm listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) was nominated due to its contribution to the society, its impressive financial strength and its product and service innovativeness.
“It is a first step to be nominated for the CBC-African Business Awards 2008. We look forward to win it,” said Mr Joseph. The overall goal of the awards is to recognise business leaders and companies that are making an outstanding contribution to the development of the continent and the economic aspirations of its ordinary citizens through innovation, example and by changing the perception of Africa’s potential in domestic and international markets.
