[2007-07-30] Morocco boosts fixed-line penetration in Q2
Moroccan telecommunications regulator ANRT has published fixed, mobile and internet subscriber figures as of the end of June. Fixed telephony subscribers rose by 20.48 percent to 1.94 million, versus 1.61 million at the end of March, thanks to the introduction of fixed phone services with restricted mobility. Fixed telephony penetration rose to 6.36 percent from 5.39 percent over the same period. At the end of June, the country had 159,177 payphones.
Mobile phone subscribers rose by 2.7 percent to 17.64 million from 17.13 million at the end of March, and compares with 13.24 million at the end of June 2006. Morocco's mobile penetration rate grew to 57.82 percent from 46.14 percent and 44.31 percent, respectively. Maroc Telecom grew its mobile subscriber base to 11.71 million at the end of June from 11.37 million at the end of March, while Medi Telecom had 5.93 million versus 5.75 million. There is no change in market shares compared to the previous quarter, 66.41 percent and 33.59 percent.
Internet subscribers grew by 10 percent in three months, to 476,909 from 433,399. In June 2006, the figure was 341,859. ADSL users increased to 444,633 from 424,713 and 331,746, respectively.
