[2007-10-26] UBA takes new name
UNITED Bank of Africa (UBA) effective yesterday started operating as the Commercial Bank of Africa Tanzania Limited (CBAT), it was announced in Dar es Salaam.
CBAT Chief Executive Officer Nehemia Mchechu told a news conference that the move followed a takeover of the bank some two years ago by the Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA).
UBA was established in 2001 in Dar es Salaam as a subsidiary of the First American Bank of Kenya. It became operational in April 2002.
The First American Bank was in 2005 bought by CBA.
“The change of the name is aimed at ensuring uniformity of the brand names of all banks owned by CBA in Africa,” Mr Mchechu said.
“Our efforts and resources will be channeled towards providing an efficient, personal and stress free banking experience to corporate, foreign missions, NGOs and individuals in personal banking market,” he said.
Group Managing Director Isaac Awuondo said CBA was the largest privately owned commercial bank in Kenya with focus on corporate and retail banking serving more than 30,000 customers.
Mr Awuondo said the bank planned to have six branches in the next five years in Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Mbeya and Arusha.
