[2007-12-12]  Stock Exchange Emerges From Trough
The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) trade picked up last week after a month of dullness.

The best performer was Twiga whose transacted shares accounted for over 75 per cent of the last week's trade.

But business was flat for TBL, Simba, TCC and Swissport while JHL, TOL, KA, Tatepa and EABL slumbered.

The Citizen weekly review shows that the bourse traded 312,326 shares worth Sh356.88 million in 280 deals last week, up from 118,672 shares valued at Sh136.66 million transacted in 171 deals a week earlier.

Twiga accounted for 75.17 per cent of the bourse's total turnover last week.

The company traded 233,204 shares worth Sh268.27 million in 178 deals over the period.

It transacted 105,363 shares worth Sh120.05 million in 99 deals the previous week.

TCC transacted 43,964 shares worth Sh58.91 million in 21 deals last week, higher than 837 shares worth Sh1.12 million traded in five deals a week earlier.

TBL traded 4,468 shares worth Sh7.15 million in 46 deals last week compared with 4,362 shares worth Sh6.93 million in 44 deals a week earlier.

Simba's turnover decreased to Sh1.79 million realised from 1,469 shares traded in three deals last week.

The preceding week, firm's turnover stood at Sh7.49 million realised from 6,139 shares transacted in seven deals.

Swissport transacted 29,221 shares worth Sh20.75 million in 32 deals last week compared with 1,153 shares worth Sh0.82 million traded in nine deals the previous week. The bourse market capitalisation went up to Sh3,154.28 billion last week from Sh3,151.98 billion.

The good performance was attributed to increase in TBL market capitaliation.

The firm's market capitalisation grew to Sh471.89 last week from Sh465.99 a week earlier.

That happened because the firm's share price gained to Sh1,600 from Sh1,580 over the period.

Most companies' share prices and market capitalisations stagnated, with exception of Twiga that gained to Sh1,160 a share last week up from Sh1,140 a week earlier.

The bourse share index improved to 1023.67 last week from 1021.75 the previous week.
