[2008-07-10] ECONET Wireless hikes tariffs Mobile network operator, ECONET Wireless, has increased its tariffs by more than 2 000 percent.
The new charges are with effect from today.
Workers at the country’s other mobile network operator, NetOne, said their tariffs would also go up and had yesterday stopped processing applications for services such as SIM card replacement in preparation for the new charges.
Cell phone charges were last increased on 1 July when tariffs on the country’s three network operators went up by 100 percent.
Econet subscribers will now pay about $2,7 billion from $144million per minute to call another Econet subscriber during peak hours and $2,5 billion from $136 million during off peak hours.
Calling different network subscribers during peak hours now costs about $2,9 billion per minute.
During off peak hours, the tariffs are $2,7 billion per minute from $140 million.
International calls to fixed receivers in group 1 countries have gone up from $257million to about $5,4billion per minute.
Calling fixed receivers in Group Two countries will cost about $5,2 billion, while $$4,6 billion will be charged on calls made to fixed receivers in group 3 countries.
Calls made to all international mobile receivers will cost $6,5 billion from $257 million.
A local SMS now costs $1,1 billion from $20 million while an international SMS is pegged at $4,1billion from $80 million. Source: (C) 2008 THE HERALD.
